Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Make informed decisions
  • Gather and verify different types of data from multiple sources to provide a system level view of situations and problems requiring decisions
  • Identify changing circumstances that influence decisions and planning
  • Use decision-making tools to assist in critical analysis and assimilation of new information and enable safe and timely decisions to be made
  • Develop workable solutions, assess associated risks, and determine best option in accordance with organisational procedures and level of own responsibility
  • Actively consult with stakeholders when making important decisions that impact their responsibilities and the organisation’s value chain
  • Implement timely decisions to meet operational deadlines, and monitor impacts of implementation to confirm desired outcome is achieved or adjust as needed in response to changing circumstances

  • Assess each situation within required timeframe, note the most relevant features, and note reasons for unexpected or unusual features and events
  • Address situations within scope of own role or escalate when level of own responsibility, area of expertise or potential consequences demand escalation according to organisational processes
  • Adhere to organisational protocols and procedures outlining safe work practices to support clear decision making in difficult and high-pressure situations
  • Evaluate common methods for addressing similar situations, based on previous experience or training, or by mentally simulating options and their consequences
  • Make decisions based on current available information and communicate them clearly for swift deployment with a focus on achieving desired outcomes within a specific timeframe
  • Monitor implementation to confirm the effects and outcomes within desired timeframe and take further action in response to changing circumstances
  • Log or report situation, response, outcomes, and any modifications made, in line with organisational procedures

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
